Community
RMC is a rich community of diverse people sharing life together. Many of the events and programs are run by residents who bring their own skills and experiences to share with the community. You might like to consider what it will look like for you to make your own unique contribution to College Life.
The RMC Student Association organises many of the College-wide events such as Welcome Week, Intercollege Sport, Block Wars, fundraising events, Karaoke nights, Spring Festival, College Ball and many more.
Residents are invited to put themselves forward to join RMCSA Committees (Sports, Social, Diversity & Equity, Sustainability, Volunteering & Fundraising, Community, Communications & Marketing) at the election during the General Meeting in March and Student Executive positions for the following year are elected in October in the Annual General Meeting.
Each Block also has a team of Residential Advisors who are senior students who provide care and support to college residents. They may also organise Block-specific events such as movie nights, picnics or excursions around Sydney.
Formal Dinners
During the year there is also a program of five formal dinners that are compulsory for residents in their first 12 months at RMC (Commencement Dinner, International Night, Truth & Justice Dinner, Welcome Back Dinner, and Valedictory Dinner).
On Monday nights there is “RMC Family Dinner Night” where the whole community can gather together for dinner as well as hear the weekly College Notices.
Celebrating Diversity
With residents hailing from more than 32 countries around the world, our diverse backgrounds pave the way for countless cultural experiences and a variety of social events throughout the year. Every member of our community is valued and has a unique contribution to make and we aim for College to be a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
We facilitate connections between our residents through communal gatherings such as Commencement Dinner, International Night, Reconciliation Dinner, Welcome Back Dinner and Valedictory Dinner. These college-wide dinners allow us to reflect about culture and celebrate the mixture of backgrounds that our residents represent. We also celebrate traditional festivals and celebrations that are represented by members of our community and there are many opportunities to share and learn about other cultures.
Whilst our community is large, each resident also belongs to a block and a floor and there are opportunities to make connections in smaller groups, such as Block Suppers and Block Wars and other Block related events.Residents can initiate and organise events that match their particular interests.
Fostering Your Interests
College should be a place where you learn about yourself – your character, interests, and goals. Intercollegiate events provide a great opportunity for you to meet students from other colleges who have the same interests. You can participate in intercollegiate sports, join a choir or get involved with other groups at Macquarie University.
Our College also provides a space where our creative residents can thrive. If you love the arts, there are many opportunities for you to develop and perform in your area of interest. We have a Music Room and a Creative Room, an annual Arts Week and many opportunities to do performances at Formal Dinners and other events.
If writing is more your thing, you are welcome to join our talented publications team. Our resident journalists and editors produce quarterly and annual periodicals such as The Voice and The Echo, which showcase local news from around College and our community.
Promoting Leadership
We are committed to help our students to become leaders in the community. We do this by providing them with professional development support and training. Our student leadership positions allow residents to gain skills in various areas, while giving them the opportunity to be well-engaged within the community.
These positions include Residential Advisors, Academic Tutors, Duty Officers and members of the RMC Student Association Executive and Committees. This variety of student positions means that we are able to cater for a range of interests and needs as well as providing many opportunities to contribute to the community and to grow personally and professionally.
